Bio

Evangelina is a Brooklyn-based, Mexican-American mixed-media textile artist whose work is a tactile exploration of identity, memory, and the "wondrous world." Originally from Chicago, her creative roots began in childhood, drawing characters inspired by the geometric patterns of her parents' kitchen wallpaper and "coloring outside the lines."

She has long found visual art to be her most natural language, serving as both a refuge and a place of discovery. Her practice is driven by an intuitive, material-led process where fabric, embroidery thread, acrylic paint, and drawing media meet found elements like mesh netting and corrugated cardboard. By layering these discarded materials, she creates figurative characters that bridge the past and present, exploring themes of culture, aspiration, and introspection.

Evangelina has developed her craft through extensive independent study and coursework at institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the 92nd Street Y, and the Fashion Institute of Technology. Her work is deeply informed by the raw honesty and structural innovation of artists such as Frida Kahlo, Faith Ringgold, Hannah Höch, and Sheila Hicks.

Drawing constant inspiration from the energy and exhibits of New York City, where she has lived for over 14 years, Evangelina continues to evolve her technical craft and visual language. In her studio, often accompanied by music or podcasts, she transforms the overlooked into the expressive, inviting viewers into a world built from curiosity and thread.

Artist Statement

The materials guide my process. I create expressive, character-driven mixed-media pieces by listening to what fabric, thread, and found elements suggest. My work is a practice of layering: mixing polish with unraveling, and order with play—to build imperfect narratives that bridge my Mexican-American heritage with the contemporary textures of my life in Brooklyn.

There is a quiet poetry in transforming discarded materials like mesh netting or corrugated cardboard into something new. Each element carries a history; giving it a new life adds a physical layer to the story I am telling. I am drawn to the tension between refinement and imperfection: fraying edges and crooked borders contrasted with delicate embellishments. These irregularities are not corrected but embraced, becoming vital to each figure’s identity.

My characters emerge with distinct attitudes: nostalgic, mysterious, or subversive. By blending childhood, doll-like nostalgia with contemporary irony, I allow the past and present to coexist, celebrating the beauty of the "unraveling" world around us.
